Recent independent research conducted by the international volunteering company Projects Abroad has revealed that 60% of business managers consider a gap year to be equally as important or more important as a university degree when considering applicants for an interview. The study, which questioned over 250 managers across a number of industries in the UK, showed that 7% of those managers questioned were actually convinced that gap years were more crucial than a degree when looking for potential employees. With employers based in HR, travel, transport and healthcare sectors being the most positive about hiring an applicant who had taken a gap year.
While this is great news for anyone undertaking a gap year, or people who have already taken one, and are looking for full time work, it’s important to remember that what you choose to do on your year out is just as valuable to potential employers. Spending a year sitting in front of the TV, going on all-inclusive holidays
and working in a dull 9-5 job is not something that a new employer is looking for, so if you want to take a gap year, you must use the time you have effectively.
But a year can go by very quickly, and you could find yourself feeling a little downcast at your lack of progress if you’re not careful. So once you’ve decided to take a gap year, think about what goals you want to achieve on your gap year. Do you want to volunteer aboard? Do you want to help construct necessities, such as wells or schools? Do you want to teach English as a foreign language? Or do you want to concentrate on working to make money for yourself? Two week long holidays in Spain
don’t count as a valid gap year experience, so don’t try to pass that off as a working holiday-employers will catch you out.
